    • 1). Place the approved gas can on the ground near the gas pump. This will ensure that the gas can is grounded properly and will reduce the possibility of static electricity building while you are filling the gas can. Approved gas cans are normally red and should have an Underwriter's Laboratories (UL) or the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) stamp.

    • 2). Prepare the gas pump to begin pumping gasoline.

    • 3). Insert the gas pump nozzle into the gas can, making sure that the nozzle has direct contact with the edge of the gas can opening. This will reduce static electricity buildup.

    • 4). Pump the gas into the gas can, filling it 95 percent full. Allowing a small amount of empty space within the gas can will give the gas room to expand, if necessary.

    • 5). Remove the nozzle and replace it back on the gas pump. Screw on the gas can lid tightly.
