Everyone wants to talk about good and bad cholesterol, but in the end, the goal total cholesterol is what ultimately counts. Doctors are first going to look at your total cholesterol number and if it is not where they want it to be, that's when they are going to start digging into the numbers to tell you where you want to be concerned.

Your goal total cholesterol includes three numbers: HDL, LDL, and triglycerides. The HDL is considered the good cholesterol while the LDL is considered the bad cholesterol. These numbers can vary at any given time throughout the year and you do have the power to control them with what you eat.

Depending on the numbers, doctors may try to give you various prescriptions to help you control all of your levels. This includes bringing HDL up and bringing LDL down. In the past, many doctors would focus solely on LDL, though now there are more medications known as statins that focus on both. This can be a problem because if your HDL is fine and your LDL is the only issue, you are taking medications that aren't exactly what you need.

The goal total cholesterol can be summed up easily. Below 200 mg/dl is desirable for your total cholesterol. You can also break it down further. Ideal HDL is 60 mg and above while ideal LDL is below 70 mg if you are at risk for heart disease, otherwise 100-129 is ideal for the average person. Triglycerides should also be below 150 mg at all times.

Your cholesterol is tested with a blood test. Most of the time, your doctor will run blood lab work once a year, unless there is cause for concern. At that point, there may be multiple blood tests throughout the year to see how your cholesterol is responding to various forms of treatment. How your doctor wants to treat your cholesterol is up to him or her, though the new guidelines call for the use of more statins, which can be dangerous territory.

When your goal total cholesterol needs to be mastered at desirable levels across the board, you may find that an increase to HDL and a decrease to LDL can benefit you. Adding antioxidants to your diet that will help to prevent the oxidation of LDL can be a great thing for you.
