Wait for a few seconds.

Move the switch at the back to the play in order or the shuffle position.
The green stripe will be visible in either position.
Place the switch in the off position before attaching it to your computer.
Retry: In case the iPod is facing some connection problems, change the USB port being used and then retry it.
Restart: Make sure all the necessary updates are installed in the computer and then restart it.
Reinstall: Firstly you need to have the latest version of iTunes installed in your system.
Then simply connect the iPod to the computer and select the "Check for Update" under the Summary tab.
The latest version then checks and sees if any update is available for the iPod and if so then updates it.
Restore: Open the latest version of iTunes on the computer.
Select the iPod from the source list and click the restore button.
You will the see one or more options for restoring the iPod.
Select the desired one.

Once completed, iTunes asks you to name the iPod.
