Home Treatment for Shiny Hair
- Instead of shampooing your hair daily, try to get away with just a few times a week to retain shine. If your hair becomes limp after one day and you simply must shampoo, condition first, avoiding your roots. Before rinsing, apply shampoo to the roots only, lather and rinse completely. This will lift your roots and retain shine. Make sure to rinse with cold water, which will close your hair cuticles and leave a shiny surface.
- Give your hair a break from blow dryers and flat irons by letting it dry naturally. Brushing and styling can strip your hair of its natural oils, causing breakage. When you must use a blow dryer, blast your hair with the dryer's "cool" setting at the end. Use a flat iron to smooth the hair that frames your face, removing extra moisture. Curly-haired women can wrap their ringlets around a barrel curling iron to finish off their look and reflect more light, resulting in shinier hair. Don't use a brush on curly hair; instead, style using your fingers. To prevent frizz, don't head out of the house until your hair is completely dry.
- Use a brush with natural bristles instead of plastic ones; boar bristles are a good choice. Natural brushes will redistribute oils and make your hair shiny again. Choose ionic blow dryers and irons, which maintain hair health and protect strands from frizz.
- Hair styling products that contain alcohol are detrimental to shiny strands. Keep in mind that mousse tends to contain alcohol; a hair cream or serum is a better choice. If you must heat-style often, use heat-activated shampoos, conditioners and other products. Before heat-styling, apply a small amount of a product that contains silicone, which will seal the cuticle and protect your strands from heat damage. Curly-haired women should use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, since wavy hair is more dull and dry than straight hair. Don't apply products too close to your scalp and roots as this can cause your hair to look greasy.
- Apply hot-oil treatment to your hair monthly or weekly to twice a month if you have severely dry hair. In the shower, wet your hair with hot water. Add approximately a tablespoon of baby oil to your hair, concentrating on the ends and avoiding the scalp. Rinse after one minute. For a more intensive treatment, wrap your hair in a hot towel for 30 minutes, then rinse. You can also make a hot oil treatment using a olive oil or jojoba oil in a glass bottle. Add water to a pan and bring to a rolling boil, then remove from heat. Place the bottle of oil in the pan for five minutes. While the oil is heating, shampoo and towel dry your hair. Apply the oil to your hair, avoiding your roots. Cover hair with a hot towel for 15 minutes, then rinse hair with warm water. Later on during the day, shampoo to remove extra oil.
