There are very few places in the world that are as yet not ravaged by modern society.
Exmouth Gulf, located in the northwest corner of Western Australia is one such place.
The town itself is small and has a laid back charm, but it is the surrounding area which is the big attraction.
Visitors can spend many days and weeks exploring the sights and attractions that are within an easy reach.
Just outside of Exmouth lies the Ningaloo Marine Park, this is the location of the Ningaloo reef.
Though not as famous as the reefs on Australia's east coast, measuring more than 260km in length it is a sight to behold.
Activities available on and around the reef include swimming, surfing, snorkeling, sailing, and whale watching.
Migrating whale sharks, humpback whales, and sea turtles can all be spotted at different times of the year.
The reef is also the home to hundreds of varieties of corals and tropical fish.
For sun worshipers, there is the option of relaxing on one of the many sandy beaches that abound in the area.
The waters around Exmouth Gulf are clean and calm, perfect for a relaxing dip after soaking up the sun's rays.
What's more, the beaches are not blighted by large crowds as is the case in other areas of the country.
For visitors who would rather explore dry land, a trip to Cape Range National Park should be penciled into an itinerary.
At first glance the landscape appears rugged and arid, but on closer inspection there are many fascinating geological formations to explore.
Two popular attractions include the Vlamingh Head lighthouse and the Yardie Creek Gorge.
Cape Range National Park also has more than 700 caves which can be explored, though this should be done with an experienced guide.
Local wildlife includes rock wallabies, emus, kangaroos, and more than a hundred different kinds of birds.
There are jeep tours available that can take visitors deep into the bush.
Flights to Exmouth Gulf are available year round.
The coolest time of the year is June, July, and August, with average temperatures around 25 degrees C.
May and June are the wettest period though not excessively so.
Between the months of December and March the temperatures can reach 35 - 40 C.
Most tourists choose to visit during spring or autumn when the climate is the most hospitable.
Accommodation is available to suit all budgets, though during the peak periods prices can double.
