The Mooney M20C Ranger
Those who are a fan of private planes might be an owner of the Mooney M20C Ranger. This is because the M20 C is the most produced model among the many Mooney variants It's interesting to note that also that the Ranger was first produced under Al Mooney's company in 1968. However in 1974 Republic Steel Corp. purchased Mooney Aircraft from Butler Aviation and when it started its production line the Mooney M20C was once again reintroduced to the market in 1975. So there's something about the Ranger that it has been produced quite massively and reintroduced again in the market.
The visionary of the Mooney aircrafts, Al Mooney, designed the fleet of a piston-powered aircraft that is propeller driven. There have been many variants and included is the Ranger, which has been in production between 1962 and 1978.
The M20s have been created with a ram air system which was fondly named the Mooney Power Boost. The system works by filtering the intake air before it enters the induction system. When the €Power Boost€ feature is selected it releases partially the unfiltered air so that it goes into the induction system and carries with it a higher pressure giving a greater power output.
Mooney M20C Ranger came out as the last of the Mooney with a short body specification. This is carried a more powerful fuel injection engine. The Ranger produced in 1968 and 1975 carries a Lycoming O-360-A1D with 180 Horsepower and it has its cowl flaps fixed, and dorsal fin removed and has a one-piece windshield. By 1975 it has added some electric gear and flaps. The M20C displays a square chin-like carburetor that is protruding in the lower cowling. This feature gives a boost for the aerodynamics of the airplane.
All Mooneys have good reviews when it comes to the runway acceleration, the distance of take off and the distance to climb for over a 50 foot obstacle. This is because of how the design fits together for the short fuselage, the 180 horsepower and its light weight. Some owners have some issues with the fixed entrance step of the Mooney planes. Another thing, because this is a short body aircraft it is more suitable and comfortable if it carries only two passengers. It's no good for a third wheeler or more so a fourth wheel in the party. It would be too uncomfortable for them for the rest of the ride. The Ranger like any short-bodied plane has no much legroom to go around.
However, this proves to give an enjoyable ride for two passengers with relatively good amount of gears and baggage. It can carry a fuel capacity of 52 gallons and gives you a speed of 147 knots. So you can enjoy a good ride even when you cross-country.
