How to Determine Which Formula to Feed My Newborn

    • 1). Choose a style of newborn formula. Infant formula comes in three different styles: ready-made, powdered or concentrated. All styles contain the same ingredients and no one style is better than another in terms of a baby’s digestion. The only difference between the three options is convenience and price. For example, ready-made formula is the most expensive and requires no preparation beyond heating up the newborn’s bottle. Concentrated formula is the middle option and requires you to dilute the formula with water. Finally, powdered formula is the most affordable option, but you must mix the powder with water for each bottle that you prepare.

    • 2). Consider the newborn’s allergies or additional ingredients you would like included or avoided in infant formula. For example, many infant formulas include DHA, a fatty acid that assists in brain development for infants. In addition, special formula exists for premature or underweight babies. Premature formula provides more calories and fat than other formulas to encourage these babies to gain weight quickly.

    • 3). Decide what you would like the source of the protein in the formula to be. For example, if your newborn baby is lactose-intolerant, avoid using a formula that uses cow’s milk as the protein source. However, most lactose-intolerant babies can tolerate a soy protein formula.

    • 4). Shop around for a good price. Instead of buying name brand formula, consider purchasing generic versions at retail or grocery stores. Most of these formulas contain the exact same ingredients; the name brand version can cost twice as much. In addition, pay attention to coupons and when your baby’s favorite formula goes on sale.
