    • 1). Put on gloves. Other protective clothing, such as an apron or goggles, is optional. Assemble all of your ingredients and equipment. Then adjust the weight on the kitchen scale to show as zero when a small bowl is placed upon it.

    • 2). Measure 1 tsp. of agar agar into a bowl and add 8 ounces of warm water. Mix it with your gloved hands to form a thick paste called mucilage. If mixture is dry and crumbly, add more water ¼ tsp. at a time.

    • 3). Cover the bowl with a warm, damp cloth and set aside in a warm or sunny place.

    • 4). Measure 2 tbsp. of dried catnip into a clean bowl. Grind into a powder by rubbing the herbs against the side of the bowl with a large spoon. Repeat with lavender, allspice and rose petals using a separate bowl for each. Cover the bowls and set them aside.

    • 5). Combine 6 tbsp. of powdered sandalwood, 1 tbsp. of ground orrisroot and 2 tbsp. ground benzoin. Mix until it is well blended in the bowl you adjusted to use on the kitchen scale.

    • 6). Add six drops of pennyroyal oil to sandalwood combination, using your hands to work the oil in.

    • 7). Add the catnip, lavender, allspice and rose petals plus six more drops of pennyroyal oil. Combine it well.

    • 8). Place the bowl in the kitchen scale. Weight the incense and calculate what 10 percent of the weight is.

    • 9). Add potassium nitrate (saltpetre) to the mixture, so that it takes up 10 percent of the incense. For example, if you have 5 ounces of incense mixture, you'd add .5 ounces (1/2 an ounce) of potassium nitrate. Mix it well.

Remove the cloth from the mucilage. If it has thickened to the point of being almost solid, add ¼ tsp. of water and mix it in.

    • 11

Add mucilage to the incense powder 1 tbsp. at a time, mixing well after each addition. When you have reached a consistency similar to children's modeling dough, stop.

    • 12

Form small cones with your hands or roll the incense into ropes and cut to desired length.

    • 13

Set formed cones on waxed paper and allow to dry for at least 5 days. Store them in a plastic storage bag.
