The Piper Pawnee is a low cost tow airplane with lots of towing power. It is a popular plane among tow pilots and glider pilots towed by the Pawnee. It is a fun plane to fly and also very much usable as a Piper workhorse. The Pawnee is used as an agricultural plane for crop spraying and also for pesticide spraying and crop dusting. The wings of the Pawnee are where the spray bars are placed for spraying purposes. The cockpit of this plane is placed high on the fuselage for excellent view because of the low wing design which can cause obstruction in view. The cockpit is also design to be strong to remain undamaged in slow speed crashes usually encountered when spraying. Undercarriage of the plane is also designed to be strong. Because of the danger from toxic chemical contamination, the ventilation of the airplane is designed to prevent this spray fallout. These features contributed to the Piper Pawnee becoming a popular workhorse among the Piper family of light aircrafts.

The Piper Pawnee came first into production in 1959 and production continued until 1982. There are four variants of the Pawnee, the 150 HP model, the 235 HP €B€model, the 260 HP€C€ models, and the 260 HP €D€ model. Cruise speeds of these airplane types do not go higher than the 100 knots speed and the stronger horsepower versions of the Piper Pawnee was built for load capacity. The plane has about 1,700 pounds of usable load which is good for fuel load and spray and for whatever hauling procedures it is tasked to do. The newer versions of the Pawnee have a jump seat but it is still basically a single seat aircraft. It is designed as a workhorse and the best at it for crop spraying or towing gliders.

The low wing monoplane that was the Piper Pawnee was built with fixed landing gear. It was powered initially with the AVCO Lycoming 0-320 a flat four engine and later redesigned the PA 25-150 Pawnee with glass fiber chemical hopper installed. Advanced design features were added to reduce likelihood of meeting an accident. A high sitting position cockpit was designed to ensure excellent all around view. Soon, other variants of the Pawnee were introduced with larger chemical hopper and larger engines.

Approximately 5,000 units of the Piper Pawnee were built until production was stopped in 1982. This plane was popular with many in the crop spraying business and also those owning large tract of crop lands. Its popularity and excellence in the crop spraying and crup dusting made it popular among this market segment of the used plane market.
