This year when you return to the ancient city of Toledo after acquiring your SPAIN HOLIDAY RENTALS, come back to see if you can understand the little known story of Toledo when it sunk into its darkest period. The story is a sad but true one that involves a little boy and his father: one of which made the ultimate sacrifice. This period is referred to as the Siege of the Alcazar in Toledo.

This story starts when Francisco Franco began his military rebellion on July 17th 1936 in Spanish Morocco. This in turn on the 18th of July forced Colonel Moscardo, the military governor of the province of Toledo, to order the Guardia Civil that controlled the province to the city of Toledo. Subsequently on the 18th and 19th of July the La Guardia thwarted several attempts to obtain munitions from the arms factory at Toledo by the War Ministry of the Republican government. At this point Moscardo was threatened with a force from Madrid.

On the 21st of July a proclamation declaring a State of War was read by a Captain from the Military Academy in the main plaza of Toledo. Shortly thereafter the Republican troops were sent from Madrid to take the munitions from the factory but the La Guardia sent them to the Alcazar before destroying the factory.

On what was to become a sad day in history, Colonel Moscardo moved his troops along with women and children inside the Alcazar. This fortress has suffered many sieges during its turbulent history but none more devastating than what was about to happen. For seventy days and nights the heavy bombardment was relentlessly maintained.

On July the 23rd a telephone call was made to the Alcazar by a Republican officer who informed Colonel Moscardo his son Luis had been kidnapped. During the ensuing conversation the Republican officer stated that if the Colonel didnt relinquish his control of the Alcazar his son would be put to death. At this point Luis was put on the phone to prove he was indeed under their control. This is when the Colonel spoke those few but dramatic words no son should ever have to hear. Luis shouted down the phone surrender or they will shoot me. With a heavy heart, Moscardos reply was one that would live with him for the rest of his life when he said then commend your soul to God and shout Viva Espana and die like a hero. Before the phone could be put down the shot heard throughout Spain found its way into Luiss head.

On this, your last day in your SPAIN HOLIDAY RENTALS, you must know that this part of the story ends when the forces in Alcazar held out until September when Francos force was able to relieve them. The only remaining part of this story that remains today is the telephone that those few words were spoken into.
