How to Help Protect your School from Intruders
From computers in the IT labs to photographic equipment in the art rooms, schools often house a large quantity of expensive equipment so they make prime targets for thieves. But you can help prevent your school from being targeted by implementing a few simple procedures…
1.Invest in quality security doors
Security doors should be installed around the entire property, not just at the main entrances. Make sure your sports hall has security doors fitted and any other entrances that may be round at the back of the school building.
2. Think about Lighting
Making sure the school is well lit, even when it's out of hours can help deter intruders. Sensor lights are great at making thieves think twice as they can come on quickly and make getting into the school a whole lot more difficult as there will be fewer places for them to hide. For a double whammy on the security front, install sensor lighting above your sports hall security doors and you'll have a real intruder deterrent.
3. Secure Expensive Equipment
Computers and expensive equipment like musical instruments should be securely locked away out of sight if possible. After all, the less the thieves can see the less there is to tempt them in. If possible, invest in internal security doors especially for rooms which house expensive equipment.
4. Employ Live-In Staff
As schools run by set times and dates it can be easy for thieves to figure out when no one will be around. If you are able to either offer staff the option of living on site, or employ a live-in caretaker, then this could really deter thieves. The more people who are about, the less likely thieves will feel they can break in without going unnoticed.
5. Brief your staff
Everyone who works at a school should feel a sense of responsibility to help ensure they leave the premises as safe and secure as possible on their way out. Checks such as the following should all take place everyday. It doesn't take long to run through a few safety checks but it could make all the difference.
• Make sure the windows are all closed and locked
• Draws and cupboards with keys are locked
• The classroom door or office is locked when they leave it
So, with a bit of extra vigilance when it comes to securing your school premises you can make a substantial difference to how attractive it looks to thieves. Brief your staff, invest in quality security Communal Doors wherever possible, and sensor lighting as an extra deterrent.
