- 1). Get a prescription for this product. Currently, there are nine states that don't require a prescription to buy the emergency contraceptive pill, including Washington, Alaska, California, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Mexico and Vermont. If you don't live in these states, you'll need to get a prescription from your doctor.
- 2). Visit your local pharmacy. The FDA has approved the emergency contraceptive pill (Plan B) to be sold by a licensed pharmacist. Before visiting your local pharmacy, call and check if they sell it. A licensed pharmacist must be on duty to sell the emergency contraceptive pill.
- 3). Understand the age limit on this product. The FDA has approved the emergency contraceptive pill for women who are older then 18. If you are younger then 18, visit your doctor to talk about other options available to you.
- 4). Show your license to the pharmacist. The FDA requires those purchasing the pill to show identification. If you don't have your license or state identification card, the pharmacist can't legally sell you the emergency contraceptive pill.
- 5). Ask about insurance reimbursement. Some health insurance companies will reimburse you for the purchase of the emergency contraceptive pill. Make sure to include your receipt when you submit a claim.
