Question: What Does a Stay-at-Home Mom Do?

Answer:

A stay-at-home mom (SAHM) stays home to raise her children and manage her household. She may have one child or several children, and they can range in ages from newborn all the way up to teenagers in high school.

A stay-at-home mom works many jobs throughout the day as this sample schedule shows. She's a nurse, chauffeur, chef, teacher, playmate, housekeeper, laundry attendant, accountant and babysitter all rolled into one.

She doesn't receive a paycheck for the 24 hours a day, 7 days a week she's on duty. She doesn't get a pay raise, sick days or 401K plans.

But a 2010 report from Salary.com says a stay-at-home mom would earn $117,856 a year for all the jobs she performs if she were paid. Moms in Canada would earn $132,288.

A SAHM may or may not have worked outside of the home before her children were born. Some stay-at-home moms plan on returning to work once the children are in school, they pick up a part-time job or they find work-at-home job opportunities. Others continue their role as a stay-at-home mom, managing the house and kids without returning to the workforce.
