How to Help Children Develop Self-Concept
- 1). Tune into your baby. Notice how your child reacts to stimulation such as noise, lights and movement. Interact with your child on their level. Respond to their laugh or sound with a smile or hug. This will help them feel validated as they begin their journey of self-discovery.
- 2). Allow your child to explore and initiate their own activities. This is especially important with toddlers as they begin to become self-conscious. Encourage their curiosity and do not give harsh punishments when they get into something they were not suppose to. Simply redirect them to another activity. Set boundaries but be flexible.
- 3). Spend quality time with your child. One-on-one time is important, especially when the child begins school. Take time out to take a walk or play a game with your child. Give positive reinforcement and focus on their strengths.
- 4). Listen to your child. Let your child know that their thoughts and concerns are valid by giving them your uninterrupted attention.
- 5). Encourage your child in whatever interests or hobbies they have. Allowing your child to explore and develop a skill they are interested in will give them a feeling of competence. Let them choose their extracurricular activities instead of pushing them into something you are interested in.
