How to Clean Soot From Rock or Stones

    • 1). Mix 2 oz. of household cleaner in each gallon of water in a bucket. If your fireplace facing is brick or particularly porous stone, sprinkle water on it first, to keep the cleaner from settling in the pores.

    • 2). Dip one of your sponges in the bucket, let the solution soak in, and then wring out over the bucket. Scrub the soot spots with your sponge until they are gone. Dip a fresh sponge in plain water, and wring it out before using it to wipe excess cleaner off the fireplace.

    • 3). Give the fireplace a couple of hours to dry. If the stains start to reappear after they dry, repeat Steps 1 and 2.
