Have you noticed that people who wear spectacles seem to get a stronger prescription every time they visit the optician? Their eyesight is getting worse.
It's because as the eye becomes accustomed to a new strength of lens, the muscles inside the eye no longer work themselves as much.
Therefore it becomes harder for the eye to work as well without the glasses.
Interestingly the vision of Eskimos living on the northern shore of Alaska was examined.
It was found that the parents and grandparents, who were illiterate and living a typical outdoor life, were not nearsighted.
Of the children, who had the benefit of compulsory education, fully 60% were nearsighted (Francis A.
Young et al, "The Transmission of Refractive Errors within Eskimo Families," American Journal of Optometry and Archives of the American Academy of Optometry 46, no.
9, September, 1969).
This may show that the more you use your eyesight for a particular task, the more your eyes adapt to that sort of thing.
In this case youngsters would be reading books which requires near focus so the majority become nearsighted, and the older generations were outside more looking at far away things so their eye's adjust to this and therefore they can see fine at distance! Contrary to what opticians say it is actually possible to reverse this process and increase vision naturally.
If you can take your glasses off when you don't really need them then you will be helping your eyes out a lot.
There are however ways to exercise your eye to increase your vision quicker.
A couple of other methods for helping to increase your vision are firstly the figure of eight method.
This is to exercise your eye muscles and increase their flexibility.
This is quite a simple exercise but a good one.
Imagine a giant figure of eight in front of you about 10 feet in front of you.
Now turn the 8 on it's side and trace the figure of eight with your eyes, slowly.
Do it one way for a few minutes and then do it the other way for a few minutes.
Another method which will help is called near and far focussing.
You can do this one almost anywhere.
Basically all you do is sit in a comfortable position, or stand.
Put your thumb about 10 inches in front of you and focus on it.
Then focus on something else about 10 - 20 feet in front of you.
On each deep breath switch between focussing on your thumb and the 10-20 feet object in front of you.
This will strengthen the muscles in your eyes over time and improve your vision overall.
