6 reasons mom shouldn"t use social media

There are many reasons moms should join the world of social media. But there are also reasons moms should disconnect from social media outlets.

1. It's Time Consuming

Popping on to update your Twitter status and scrolling through your Facebook newsfeed to see what your mom friends are up to may not seem like it takes up a lot of your time. But log your time for a week and you'll be surprised just how much of your day social media is eating into.

This is time you could have spent with your family. Social media isn't worth sacrificing quality time with your children and spouse.

2. You May Compare Yourself to Others

People have a tendency to use social media as their personal stage. You're the audience whom they've decided to brag about their personal lives to and all of those positively glowing remarks about their life, their mothering and their perfectly wonderful kids can make you feel like you're inadequate. Don't compare your life to your friends and always, always remember people don't usually share a fraction of the negative, even common, things going on in their life.

3. It's Easy to Overshare

Isn't it funny how your baby went poopy in her diaper and got it all over your new sheets? Isn't that picture of your toddler's snot bubble just adorable? What are you making for dinner? Won't everyone think that remark your eight year old said about the lady at the supermarket make everyone laugh? Don't your friends want to see your kids playing naked in the kiddie pool?

There is such a thing as oversharing on the Internet, especially when it comes to social media. Not everything should be shared and there are moments you should keep to yourself, no matter how cute, adorable or interesting you may think they are. Some things should just be special moments for your family members.

4. You Could Be Unfairly Criticized

When you open up about the details of your life, you also open yourself up to criticism. Sharing your views, even your parenting experiences, can lead to people jumping in to share their opinions which may even include criticism of how you're running your house. This can cause you unnecessary stress as a mom.

5. You Can Get Bogged Down with Other People's Lives

Of course you care about your friends. But you can easily get bogged down in the daily details of their lives through social media. Some people practically post every minute of their lives through social media and you can find yourself getting involved in their daily musings, even drama.

6. You Continually Reveal Your Family's Private Info

With every picture you post of your child, every check in, every gripe about your child's school, every post about your family's vacation, you're revealing information you wouldn't want a stranger to know. How well do you know that guy from elementary school that you just friended? How much do you really know about those 10 new Twitter followers? Today's technology and everyone's willingness to share without giving the info they're revealing a second thought makes it way too easy to tell people everything they want to know about your children, including their names, where they go to school, where they live and even when they're out of the house.
