Oily skin is the result of overactive sebaceous glands, which produce more oil than what is needed. The pores are usually enlarged with oily skin and embarrasing blemishes are also present. Here are some tips and tricks to help prevent, control, and treat oily skin:
  • Keep your skin very clean. Wash your face 2-3 times a day with warm water and pure or lightly medicated soap, massaging face with fingertips in an upward and outward motion.
  • Use a facial moisterizer with benzyl peroxide in the list of active ingredients. This helps reduce sebaceous secretions.
  • Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.
  • Drink lots of water, atleast 8 glasses a day, to stay well hydrated and flush out unwanted toxins.
  • Avoid greasy food, junk food, and too much sugar/soft drinks.
  • Apply witch hazel as a toner to help absorb oils.
  • Avoid cleansers that dry out skin, this can cause your skin to produce even more oil.
  • Try a product containing retinoids. Retinoids help reduce production in oil glands.
  • Always choose an oil-free foundation.
  • Avoid touching your face with your hands, phones, etc. Clean your phone regularly to prevent spreading bacteria.
  • Try to avoid cosmetic sponges, sponges cannot be cleaned well which can lead to the spread of bacteria. Instead, use foundation brushes, eye shadow brushes, etc.
  • Keep oil absorbing sheets on hand at all times. These are very convenient, especially after a work out, and much cleaner than wiping the face with a sweaty towel.
  • Use a clay or mud mask 1-2 times a week to absorb excess oils.
  • Try to wear hair and bangs pulled back as often as possible, especially during a workout.
  • If possible, get a professional facial about once a month.
  • Apply an egg yolk mask to dry out the excess oil of skin. Leave the egg yolk mask on for 10 minutes then rinse with cool water.
  • Another excellent home remedy for oily skin is the Milk of Magnesia mask. Apply non-flavored Milk of Magnesia to the skin as a mask. Leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse with cool water.
