Adaptive Sports Organizations

Adaptive sports organizations are changing the way the disabled athletes, as well as the able-bodied, view spectator sports. With the constantly improving modifications to wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment, disabled athletes are beginning to enjoy a wider range of sports. While wheelchair basketball is still one of the primary adaptive sports played at the college level, it is only a matter of time before other sports, such as racing, golf and tennis gain similar popularity.
In the winter, the ASA offers "adaptive ski, snowboard and ski bike instruction at Durango Mountain Resort". In the summer, the organization offers "river rafting, rock-climbing, canoeing, flatwater kayaking, fishing, cycling and camping in a variety of locations throughout the spectacular San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado". The NSCD offers therapeutic sports and recreational activities for people of all ages and disabilities. Summer activities range from kayaking and sailing to horseback riding. Winter activities include skiing, snowboarding and backcountry hut trips, as well as other activities.More »
Originally established in 1967 by disabled Vietnam War veterans, the DSUSA organization today offers rehabilitation sports programs to people of all ages and disabilities. They are a nationwide organization with regional chapters. They work to provide competitions, sporting events and a wide variety of sports opportunities for disabled people.More »
