The number of Britons remaining in the UKfor their holidays has risen in recent years, with the 21st century "staycation" phenomenon taking up many column inches in the media.

But if you've decided to deviate from your usual holiday hotspots of the Costa Del Sol or the Algarve, where's the best place to head for in theUK?

You might be surprised to learn that Britain is home to some of the most stunning coastline and natural scenery in the world – if only we could guarantee the weather!

Lots of holidaymakers head for Cornwall or the Lake District when they've opted for a holiday at home – these areas boast some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country and are a real favourite for many domestic holidaymakers.  It really can prove to be a top quality option even on a budget – going al fresco in a tent can cost from as little as £10 per night (but do remember to book up early if you're going to be staying during school holidays!).

If you're heading to Scotland there are some amazing places to explore.  For those prepared to go remote, head for the Outer Hebrides which stretch for a whopping 130 miles with stunning views across the Atlantic Ocean.  There are more than 200 islands making up the archipelago, with just a handful inhabited by residents.  You'll also find some stunning scenery around Loch Lomond and Loch Katrine (the beauty of the latter inspired the poem The Lady of the Lakeby Sir Walter Scott).

Meanwhile, there is plenty on offer for the tourist in Wales, the land of the valleys.  You could try wakeboarding in Abersoch, soaking up the culture in Conwy or hitting the beach in Aberystwyth – Cymru is your oyster!   Or you might want to hop on a ferry or take a short flight to Northern Ireland, where there are a huge amount of activities to enjoy and sights to see. Why not take a road trip along theCauseway Coastal Route? This 120-mile course is rated as one of the top five road trips in the world so well worth a jaunt!

Of course, tourism in the British Islesis about more than rugged coastlines and scenic vistas.  We've got a plethora of vibrant cities to enjoy – so why not visit some of the metropolitan areas of the country while you're on your travels?  You might immediately think of the capital cities -London,Cardiff,Edinburgh and Belfast- but don't forget about other appealing places when you're picking a destination.

Birmingham, for example, is jam packed with cool stuff to see and do – for example, this June the city will host a huge music concert to mark the passing of the Olympic torch through the West Midlands.  Britain's so-called second city is also a great destination for culture vultures – just this year, visitors can enjoy a Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition, shows by Lord of the Dance and a performance by the town's symphony orchestra, so there really is something for everyone.  Like all towns and cities around the UK, hotels in Birmingham can be found for very reasonable rates – so you'll have more cash to spend on fun stuff!

Wherever you decide to spend your holiday this year, there is certainly a wealth things to see and do throughout the United Kingdom– have a great time!
