Having a premature baby is an overwhelming experience for any parent.  All plans and preparations are suddenly fast tracked with a newborn's early arrival.  Some parents aren't even able to emotionally and mentally prepare themselves for a birth that is weeks or months ahead of schedule.

Premature infants have special needs and considerations particular to their condition.    These babies are usually kilograms short of a normal newborn's weight, and are especially susceptible to infection and illness because of their premature immune systems.  Premature body organs also mean that the baby's body is not able to perform certain body functions on its own, which is why they need to be admitted in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for additional care.

While patiently waiting to take a preemie home from the hospital, there are lots of ways for parents to bond with their newborn.  Kangaroo care is a wonderful way to bond and involves abundant amounts of skin-to-skin contact with your infant to help them thrive.  Deep touches that mimic the intrauterine environment also give additional comfort to your newborn.  Nonetheless, getting a premature baby through its first few months can present different challenges to parents and families.

Nonetheless, welcoming a preemie to the world is a heartwarming moment that should be cherished by every family.  During this time, it is best to take into account the newborn's delicate condition in choosing what kind of gift you are going to give.  Friends and relatives can show their support through giving special preemie gifts that would be of great help to the family.

There are a number of preemie baby gifts available made to suit a preemie's particular needs.  Such gifts include bedding made of non-irritating and especially soft fabric for a preemie's sensitive skin.  Customized clothing made to fit a preemie's small size and have openings for intravenous tubing are also a great gift to give.

Aside from wonderful preemie baby gifts, you can also opt to treat the parents to a relaxing massage or a day at the spa.  A preemie's parents often spend most of their time in hospitals looking after their newborn. Perhaps after making sure that their baby is stable, it would be nice to offer them a special treat for their hard work.
