Genital herpes is a social disease.
It is transmitted by being sexually active with a partner who has the disease already.
Genital herpes is commonly known as herpes simplex 2.
There don't need to be any sores present to be transferred from one partner to another.
It is a good practice to know the health history of any partners with which you are having sex.
Using prophylactics is another step in preventing the transmission of genital herpes.
Not only can genital herpes be contracted from sexual intercourse, it can also be transmitted by oral sex.
The herpes found in and around the mouth is better known as herpes simplex 1.
It is a virus with a very similar make up as herpes simplex 2.
It generally leaves the same results on the genitals with the performance of oral sex.
It can be recognized as fever blisters or cold sores on the mouth.
Symptoms of genital herpes include sores which appear on the vagina, penis and/or rectum.
The sores may change into an ulcer-like spot on those areas.
It is very uncomfortable to the touch.
It may hang around for 7 to 10 days and then disappear.
When the sores disappear, it does not mean that the disease is gone.
It can lie dormant in the human body for a lifetime.
It may flare up from time to time.
Some people who have genital herpes are not aware that they have it.
They may not acknowledge that they have it.
nor recognize the symptoms.
The discomfort that accompanies genital herpes can easily be mistaken for some other illness.
This can be a danger to sexual partners who may unknowingly contract the disease.
If the sexually active people have more than one partner, the disease can be passed to many before anyone realizes they have it.
There actually is no cure for genital herpes.
There are some medications that are created to prevent herpes simplex 2 from showing up as often as it could.
Some medications can make it not last as long nor feel as painful as it may without medication.
There are some medications that claim to prevent it from showing up again.
However, don't get a false hope that it is gone forever because there is no cure for genital herpes.
