Cats make pretty and wonderful pets.
Although they are made pets, their basic animal instinct of clawing does not leave them.
Cats use their Claws for scratching, digging in the litter-box and as a sense of defense against insects around them.
More often than not, they indulge in this practice on our furnishings or carpets.
This could cause undue damage to one's belongings and frustration in the owners.
There are many ways one can avoid such damage.
These include clipping the claws, putting plastic caps, earmarking places for this activity and so on.
Some people consider de-clawing as an option which can be disastrous for the pet.
Claw is the last portion of the bone in their toes.
By de-clawing, one would be removing this bone which in reality is amputating the bone.
The surgical procedure involved is painful and the recovery takes long time.
Post surgery, the cat will be psychologically affected.
It will be excessively defensive since its primary weapon against attacks from insects or anything unfamiliar to it would be missing.
They will not let go of their basic instinct to dig in spite of it becoming very painful and always tend to hide from the unknown around them.
Some alternatives for avoiding damage by their claws include: •Installing scratching posts having catnip to attract them •Fixing claw-caps made of plastic on their claws.
This is comfortable and effective •Using the correct sized scissors for clipping their claws in time 'Cat-tree' is a recent innovation that serves both as a post for scratching and as a gym for these pets.
