How to Know the Sex of Your Goldfish
- 1). Look for breeding tubercles to determine if your fish is male. These are tiny white dots which will develop on the fish near the eyes, gills and fins in a male goldfish of sexual maturity.
- 2). Check for vents. The vent opening is located just in front of the tail. If it is protruded, the fish is probably female; if it is longer, it's probably male.
- 3). Check the fishes' overall shapes. Females are usually rounder and have wider abdomens, with a more protruding appearance. In addition, their body will get larger as they produce eggs.
- 4). Watch your fishes' behavior. The males will generally chase or nudge the females, as a reaction to pheromones released by the females. However, please note that if there are no females in your tank, males may chase each other.
