Medicines for Cancer Prevention
- Acapodene, also known as toremifene, is a hormone drug shown to reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer by as much as half in men who are at a high risk for developing the disease. Toremifene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator, which is currently being used to treat breast cancer. According to Dr. David Price, director of urologic oncology and clinical research at Regional Urology LLC in Shreveport, Louisiana, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.
- Statins have recently been linked to lowering the risk of breast cancer. Statins are normally used in reducing or lowering cholesterol, but new data indicate that statins may suppress tumor growth in animals. The data presented for humans regarding statins as a breast-cancer preventer is conflicting. A study regarding statins and breast-cancer prevention was conducted among 40,000 female veterans. Women who took statins showed a 51 percent lower risk for breast cancer than non-users. According to Dr. Vikas Khurana, senior study author and assistant professor of medicine at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, someday researchers may decide to give statins to everyone as a preventative measure, but not yet.
- Raloxifene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) such as tamoxifen. Raloxifene does not stimulate estrogen receptors in the lining of the uterus. According to lead investigator Dr. Angela DeMichele, raloxifene is more effective during the first three years of use. Dr. DeMichele is an assistant professor of medicine at the Abramson Cancer Center and Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatics at the University of Pennsylvania.

If you are at a higher risk for developing some kinds of cancer, like if you have a family history of cancer, it's a good idea to speak to your doctor about what you can do to prevent cancer.
