Traveling can be a special and fulfilling experience for you if you take advantage of it. Learning how to plan trips is not that hard, but it does require some research so that you don't end up getting lost or losing money on something you don't need. This list of tips should help you become a smarter traveler.

When you are traveling, neatly roll your clothes instead of folding them. By doing this, you will save the amount of space you use in your luggage. Once you reach your destination, you can unroll them and fold before placing into drawers if you wish. This should reduce the amount of baggage necessary for your trip.

When traveling by air, bring your own pack of disinfectant wipes. These wipes come in handy for cleaning off tray tables, headphones, and even the arms of your seat. This might just keep you from getting sick, and will help you in knowing you are sitting in a sanitary environment.

Pack an A/V cable for your laptop. This will give you instant access to watch movies on your in-room television. Plug an audio/visual cord into your laptop and the TV jack. This enables you to bypass expensive in-room movies, and use your Netflix or Amazon accounts for considerable savings.

Get to the bus terminal at least an hour in advance of the travel time listed on your ticket. You need to have time to check-in and drop off your bags, and get any amenities you may need ready to go. Remember, bus seats are not assigned, the early passengers get the best seats.

Most flights that are long and include meals, have options for a kids' meal if you request for a children's meal before you get on the flight. This is particularly useful if your kids are picky and would much rather enjoy chicken fingers instead of steamed vegetables for their meals.

Make sure your passport is up to date! You should also make sure you have two copies of your passport, leaving one at home and taking the other on the trip with you. This ensures you do not have to have any problems trying to identify yourself to authorities later on.

You should start packing in advance so that you do not forget anything and have time to determine what you will need. Do not bring anything unnecessary: you could use all the room in your luggage for things you will actually use. Try packing one bag only if you can.

When traveling by bus, arrive as early as possible. While most bus companies recommend arriving at least an hour before your scheduled departure, the earlier you arrive the better. This is because buses do not use assigned seating, so arriving early gives you your choice of all of the available seats.

Separate valuables and important documents while traveling in different bags or pockets. This way, if you lose your wallet or bag, you do not lose all of your valuables or identification. Consider anything difficult to replace or necessary when deciding where to pack items. For example, you may want to pack one credit card in your luggage and another in your wallet.

When traveling by air, sometimes the airline will give out booties or slippers to passengers to encourage them to take off their shoes and relax for the flight. At the end of the flight, instead of leaving the booties behind, take them with you and use them as shoe covers for the shoes in your baggage. Covering your shoes won't soil the other items in your suitcase. It's one small way to get the most out of your costly flight.

As you can see, there is a lot more to traveling than most people think. It requires a lot of research and planning, but it will be worth it in the end to have a great trip. By following the above tips, you are well on your way to becoming a smarter traveler.
