Various Indian towns and cities are popular for one reason or the other, but you will be surprised by hearing that there is one Indian town, which has become popular for its curse given before four hundred years. Talakad was cursed in the most harsh words like €May Talakadu be filled with Sand, Malangi be a Whirlpool and Mysore Kings shall not have offspring's€.
Talakad also called Talakadu by the locals is a tiny town nestled on the banks of Kaveri River at just forty five km from Mysore. This historic site had more than thirty temples, which were dramatically buried under sand. This location of temples which is a pilgrimage place lies at a spot, where the river takes a sharp turn. The legend of the most shocking curse is described in short as Raja Wodeyar attacked and captured Srirangapatna by overthrowing Tirumala. After knowing the cruel plan of Tirumala the king wanted to punish him by taking away the valuables of Rani Alemelamma. When the soldiers tried to reach her for taking away her valuables, she ended her life by jumping into the waters of Kaveri River. But before ending her life she cursed the Wodeyar king in a shocking manner.
Looking at the happenings after this incidence many people believe about the curse has come true but others don't believe in it. Some of the incidents which support the curse is this town was buried under sand dunes and hence evacuated. It is also observed that Kaveri River creates horrible storms near Malangi and the third notable point is alternate generations of the Wodeyars are facing one or the other problem. Even though old city of Talakad was covered with sand still the tops of two temples are visible. Every year the sand dunes are approaching the nearby settlements hence pushing them still forward. The population is showing a substantial increase due to the wet lands available near the temples. Out of the thirty temples Kirti Narayana temple is freed from the sand cover along with vydyanatheshwara temple. Temples like Gaurisankara and €nand"svara, which were later uncovered show many inscriptions written on their walls which describes that these temples were built somewhere in the period 1672€"1704. Legend about these temples says that it was Ramanujacharya who built five Vishnu temples in the region which were popular as Pancha Narrayan Kshetrams.
History of Mysore revolves around the Wodeyar dynasty which ruled Mysore for a long period from 1399 till independence and Mysore and its surrounding region preserves every impact of the Wodeyar rule.
