Hair Transplantation— The most feasible way of restoring a thick head of hair

A successful hair transplantation surgery can actually cover up bald patches using a person's own baldness resistant hair and achieve a permanent hairline that appears thoroughly natural without any noticeable signs of treatment. There have been significant advancements in the domain of cosmetic surgery over the last few decades; and hair transplantation is not an exception.

There are two techniques of hair transplantation—
  • FUT, or Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation
  • FUE, or Follicular Unit Extraction

The distinguishing factor between the two procedures is determined by the way follicular units of hair are extracted from the back of the scalp.

The FUT procedure derives from the traditional strip technique, in which a hairy strip of skin is surgically removed from the back portion of the scalp, or donor zone as it is referred. The skin strip is then followed by microscopic dissection of hair follicles. The donor wound is closed and sutured.

In case of FUE direct extraction of follicular units is involved. Each hair follicular unit contains one to four hair follicles and both the techniques focus on the extraction of these FUs, though in two different ways. Nevertheless, once the extraction is done, the implantation methods are same for both the procedures.

The quality of the permanent donor zone is the most crucial factor in extraction of hair follicles. The success of a hair restoration surgery depends largely on choosing the grafts with the characteristics of donor dominance rather than the number of grafts that are extracted.

In the FUE method, the decisive role is played by the punch needles, choosing the right size of which can minimize damage to the donor area to a considerable extent. The bottom line is, the finer the needle, the lesser the damage and the least scar visibility to others that can be seen as little dots (micro scars). The scars being less observable, people tend to prefer FUE over FUT in recent times as they can wear their hair very short and still the scars remain unnoticeable. However, FUE is more time consuming and requires greater expertise and expense.

The FUT procedure is often a matter of scare, for first of all the surgery involves removing a strip of skin from the scalp, and secondly because it leaves a scar. Patients who go for FUT extraction often undergo special closure techniques like trichophytic closure for minimum scarring.

Thus, be it choosing the right hair follicles or performing either of the techniques, an experienced team of surgeons is a matter of paramount importance. Hair Transplantation has been a familiar name in the cosmetic field. Cosmetic surgeons specialising in hair restoration have attained mastery over these implantation techniques of both FUT and FUE hair transplant for years.

Choosing the surgeon is the most integral part of your decision to have surgery. The surgeon that knows exactly what is to be done in order to provide you with natural looking results. It is not up to what procedure you choose between FUT and FUE, it is up to the skill and expert of the surgeon that can prevent transplanted hair follicles from getting damaged.
