The new school year is right around the corner, which means that it's time to get you and your children back into your normal school routine.
With the new school year comes all of that daily homework that your child will be bringing home.
With that homework comes the battle between you and your child to get the homework finished on time every night.
This is where the importance of scheduling your child's homework time comes into play.
Here are a few reasons that all parents should make sure that their children have scheduled time to complete their homework.
Your Child Knows What to Expect - When you choose a certain scheduled time for your child to do their homework each day, you are letting your child know what to expect on every day that they have homework.
For my children, I pick them up from school each day and they are required to start their homework the moment we come home.
By doing this, they know that they need to get straight to work when we come home and there is no discussion on the matter.
Now, keep in mind that we may not go straight home from school.
I might have a few errands that I need to run before heading home, but in the last year I've noticed that if I do have an errand to run the girls will actually begin their homework while we are still in the van.
They are always excited to show me that they are already finished with the homework by the time we make it home that day.
When we do go straight home the girls always head straight to the dinner table and begin their homework, without any question or complaint against it.
Schedules work! Your Child Knows That Schoolwork is Important - By scheduling your child's homework time, and making sure it's completed before any playtime, you are showing your child that schoolwork is important to you.
School is one of the most important things in your child's life and homework should also be looked at in that same light.
When you dedicate your time, and your child's time, to making sure that homework is completed on time, you are then showing your child that homework is important to you, and should be to them.
No More Last Minute Homework Stress - When your child has a scheduled time to work on their homework you won't have to worry about the stresses of last minute homework assignments.
I'm sure that many of you out there have been cornered by the frantic school child who just remembered, right before their bedtime, that they needed to complete a project by the next morning.
You rush around your town looking for the supplies that are need to complete the project.
By scheduling your child's homework time you won't ever have to run out to your local convenience store trying to find poster board at midnight! Easier to Remember What Needs to be Done - If you schedule your child's homework time for early after the kids come home from school, the kids tend to have an easier time remembering exactly what they need to do in order to complete their assignment correctly and easily.
Since they have probably just finished learning this assignment in class it will be easier for them to transfer that school lesson onto their homework assignment, So schedule that homework time for as early in the afternoon/evening as possible.
Feeling Proud of Themselves - If your child has had problems with completing their homework on time then scheduling their homework time can help your child's self-esteem.
They will feel proud of themselves when they get those homework assignments completed and turned in on time.
They will feel proud of themselves when you praise them for completing their homework.
Having homework time scheduled can help your child feel good about themselves and their ability to complete their schoolwork in an adequate amount of time.
No matter what time of day your child's homework gets completed, scheduling makes all the difference.
Children need schedules and structure in order to feel in control of the world around them.
They may resist new ideas, such as scheduling their homework time, but if you stay persistent and consistent your child will follow your lead.
I prefer having my children complete their homework as soon as they get home from school.
For them, the sooner they finish their homework the more time they will have to play, watch television, play on the computer and just have a nice end to their busy day.
Scheduling certainly helps them to accomplish that.
