A field training exercise, or FTX for short, is a type of training scenario typically used by military organizations to prepare units for the realities they'll face in a real-world conflict. Since these exercises can last for a few weeks, as noted by the Tamiami Composite Squadron, individuals taking part in an FTX must bring sufficient kit to survive for that time, along with the equipment needed for the exercise. - Prepare your hygiene kit. This kit will contain all the toiletries you'll need while on the exercise. It includes typical items such as deodorant, toothpaste, a small towel and a washcloth, as noted by the Airdrie Cadets website. Remember sufficient supplies of insect repellent and sunscreen, depending on the time of year.
- Pack a plate, bowl and cup, made from plastic or other non-glass materials, as well as water bottles to fill up as needed. Include cutlery and other utensils for the consumption of food. Provide yourself enough storable food for three meals a day for the duration of the FTX.
- The exact nature of the clothing required for an FTX depends on the organization running the exercise and the nature of the scenario. You might be required to bring sweatpants and -shirts, or your unit could be expected to arrive for the FTX in full battle dress uniforms, marked and tagged as appropriate.
Regardless of the specific FTX requirements, pack warm clothing, such as a sweater or jacket, for night-time wear or for cold weather, as well as a poncho or similar garment in case of rain. Select footwear suitable for the weather conditions expected; this might mean winter boots. Otherwise, take standard combat boots. - Pack a flashlight, a useful piece of kit for locating things in the dark during a training scenario or simply for finding an item that's been lost at the bottom of your bag. Remember to include replacement batteries for the flashlight.
- The type of bag you'll need depends on the length of the FTX. For shorter missions, select a duffel bag to hold your gear. For longer exercises, carry a comfortable backpack big enough to hold your gear as well as bulky items such as sleeping bags.
