    Determine Goldfish Sex

    • 1). Wash you hands before placing them in the goldfish's water. Corner the goldfish slowly with both hands, cupping them together as loosely as possible. Pick up the goldfish gently, applying only enough pressure to hold it. The fish's scales protect it, but take care not to scratch its eyes or keep it out of the water too long.

    • 2). Flip the fish over onto its back. Hold it carefully but securely with more than two fingers. Look at the spot right above the back tail, above the anal opening. This is the sex organ area. You may need the light of a lamp or a nearby window to see clearly. You may also want to use a magnifying glass to inspect the fish.

    • 3). Look carefully to see if there is a ridge in the organ area. The ridge is the sex organ that produces sperm and fertilizes the eggs. It looks like a little line and is only a few millimeters in length. If the area is flat or slightly round, the sex organs are inside the fish. In that case, the goldfish is female. If it has a ridge then it is male.

    • 4). Release the goldfish gently back into the tank.
