Indian Stocks That Trade in the United States

      The second-most populous nation in the world with a growing middle class, India is a hotbed for economic growth. Investors obviously want to a way to access the companies that are headquartered in India but it can be difficult to buy foreign stocks. However, many Indian companies have American depositary receipts or shares that trade on domestic exchanges, which make it much easier for U.S. investors to access India's evolution into a financial powerhouse.

    Tata Motors

    • Tata Motors trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker TTM. The Mumbai-based company is an automaker that produces passenger cars as well as trucks. The company developed India's first indigenous car, the Indica. American investors have been able to buy the shares since 2004. According to the Wall Street Journal, the stock has risen 116% in the past five years, well outpacing the overall market's gains.

    Dr. Reddy's Laboratories

    • The New York Stock Exchange trades Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. under the ticker RDY. This pharmaceutical company does research and development as well as marketing of current drugs and medical components. The shares have been trading in the U.S. since 2001 and gained 269% in the last five years, a period during which most pharmaceutical companies' shares lost money.

    Infosys Technologies

    • Shares of Infosys Technologies Ltd. trade on the Nasdaq, as they have done since1999. This technology services company provides business solutions as well as software, mainly for banking and managerial tasks. In the last five years, the company's shares have risen nearly 110%, well ahead of computer services peers. In 2009, rival Satyam, another Indian firm that trades in the U.S., was engulfed in a scandal when its CEO admitted to falsely inflating earnings for years. The scandal was a boon for Infosys, as many clients switched to the company from the tarnished Satyam.

    Tata Communications

    • Tata Communications Ltd. trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker TCL. Available to American investors since the year 2000, this telecommunication company provides landline, mobile and Internet services not only to India but to more than 240 countries around the world. Although telecommunications companies in general have not grown a great deal in the last five years, shares of Tata Communications have outpaced peers, rising 29%.
