Kununurra is a town located in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia. Kununurra is surrounded by stunning scenery, beautiful waterways and national parks. This article takes a look at some of the most common things to see and do, and how to get around when you are visiting Kununurra.

Local Attractions

Lake Argyle is one of Australia's largest artificial lakes. The Ord River Dam was originally constructed in 1971, and since then the spillway wall has been raised to increase capacity of the lake. The introduction of the dam has caused major changes in the lake's ecosystem. The lake now has 26 species of fish, and visitors may even be able to spot freshwater crocodiles. The area is listed as an important bird area, as it supports over 150,000 waterbirds. Visitors can enjoy cruises across the lake with either Kimberly Durack Cruises or Lake Argyle Cruises.

Art lovers are spoilt for choice when visiting Kununurra. There are a selection of galleries displaying all types of art, from aboriginal pieces to more modern styles. The Lovell Gallery and the Aboriginal Art Shop are both popular galleries.

Kununurra has a small selection of restaurants that are able to cater to all tastes and budgets. Some of the local food establishments are in hotels and resorts, while there are also more informal cafes and takeaways restaurants. Popular eateries include the Wild Mango Cafe, Kimberley cafe, Kimberley Asian Cuisine and the Pump House Restaurant and Bar. There are also several supermarkets where you can pick up some food and drinks to make your own meals if required.

Getting Around

Kununurra has its own airport, which is located 2 miles west of the town. It is served by Airnorth and Skywest Airlines, who offer flights to Broome, Darwin, Argyle and Perth. There are also several charter airlines, including Shoal Air, Alligator Airways, Heliwork and Slingair.

There are scenic bus tours which run throughout the region. Major bus tour operators include Kununurra Scenic Bus Tours, 2KTours and Outback Destinations. Kununurra has several taxi firms, which can be hired in advance by making a booking on the telephone. Short and long term car rental services are also available.
