School trips are an integral part of the growth of a student's educational development and have become an increasingly important part of the national curriculum. Much more than focusing on academic development, school trips give students the opportunity to delve into an unfamiliar culture, experiment with new language skills and test their own social limits while challenging their boundaries. Learning in a classroom becomes so much more when it is complemented by an opportunity to put theory into practice, test these theories and consider the context of all manner of subjects.

There are specialist companies that organise a wonderful array of school trips to a huge range of destinations and you don't have to travel too far to give your students an educational trip they will always remember.

Exploring Brittany in Northern France

France is the perfect destination for many school trips regardless of subject focus, age of students or dynamics of the group. Despite its convenient proximity to the UK, crossing the channel into France transports your group to a different and exciting new world. Brittany has a rich and diverse history and offers a whole host of interesting things to do and places to visit. Students can also take their time discovering a new cuisine, sampling the local galettes and crepes, and considering how the culture of the area is displayed in the local traditions, music and art of the towns.

Spend some time in the ancient town of St Malo, not only a functioning ferry port but also a pretty historical town with lots to explore. The main citadel is an old walled town that was originally built on a rocky island at the head of the Rance Estuary. In times gone by the town used its strategic location to exert control over the trade heading into the heart of Brittany, and consequently was at the focus of many a historical tale.

Mont St Michel is an 8th century abbey that was built to represent the dominance of Christianity in the area and is also well worth a visit. The bay surrounding the abbey is swept by extremely fast moving tides, and although you can explore when the tide is out you must be aware of the speed at which it changes.

A wonderful addition to school trips in the area is a visit to Dinan, a medieval town, home to a plethora of medieval ruins. The town centre is surrounded by ramparts and overlooked by the Rance plateau. A glorious castle dominates the small town adding to its charm and elegance. The birthplace of Constable Bertrand de Guesclin, full of beautiful gardens and complemented by a picturesque old town, Dinan is a truly delightful place to visit.

Give your students the pleasure of an excursion to Jurques Zoo, home to 650 animals from all corners of the planet. Here you can see lions, zebra and giraffe and even get up close and personal to some dangerous snakes. As this zoo was set up with a focus on conservation there is a strong emphasis on interaction. Students can join feeding times, learn about the natural habitats of the animals in the park, and ask as many questions to the helpful staff as they like.

School trips are great fun and give students a chance to branch out on their own, question preconceived ideas and make some fabulous memories to take home.
