How to Remove Dried Pet Odors
- 1). Vacuum carpet or upholstery thoroughly, using attachments as necessary to reach all the fabric-covered surfaces of the furniture. Take removable cushions off upholstered furniture and air out in an outdoor area for two to three hours. Some upholstered furniture features removable cushion or pillow covers. Take these off and wash as directed by the manufacturer's instructions.
- 2). Find the stained area, using a black light if you do not know exactly where the stain is located. Turn off all the lights and shine the black light over all the carpets or furniture that you suspect harbor stains. Draw a line lightly around the stain with chalk.
- 3). Rent a carpet cleaning machine from your local grocery or hardware store. Extractors work best, forcing water into the carpet and sucking it back out, along with any dirt and odors present, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Use only water for cleaning to avoid any risk of fabric or carpet damage.
- 4). Apply an enzyme-based carpet and upholstery spot cleaner on areas that still look or smell stained. Always spot-test chemicals on an inconspicuous spot first to avoid damage.
- 5). Replace your carpet or upholstery only as a last resort. This may prove necessary in some cases when the urine soaks into the padding beneath the carpet. Take this drastic step only after consultation with a professional carpet cleaning company, which may have additional suggestions to try first.
