Reasons for Cat Constipation
- A healthy diet containing enough fiber and moisture content will prevent feline constipation. Feed a wet food (canned) diet and try adding a spoonful of plain unsweetened pumpkin to the food for an added fiber boost.
- Provide plenty of fresh water and make sure the cat drinks enough to keep stool moist and prevent stool hardening in the bowels.
- Cats groom themselves by licking their fur, causing an occasional hairball which can get stuck in the bowels. Brush the cat regularly to ensure shedded hair does not enter the intestines.
- Obesity can contribute to constipation in cats. Reduce the amount of calories the cat eats and see that he exercises at least 15 minutes a day.
- Feline constipation is a serious condition and if untreated can lead to more serious problems including obstipation (severe constipation) and megacolon (dilated colon) which can result in death of the cat.
