Emerging Therapies for Melanoma
Emerging Therapies for Melanoma
Substantial progress has been made in understanding the pathogenesis of malignant melanoma at the cellular level, leading to the development of several new agents in the treatment of melanoma. The focus of this review is to summarize the emerging therapies and investigational agents in the treatment of melanoma over the last 5 years.
The incidence of melanoma is rising with an estimated incidence of 59,940 cases and an annual death rate of 8110 in 2007. Patients diagnosed with early-stage disease (stage I and II) have an excellent clinical outcome compared with those diagnosed with stage III or IV disease, who continue to have significant morbidity and mortality.
