After facing a severe slowdown in market, Indian car providers enters in new year with lots of hope and signed off 2011 on a positive note as in the month of December companies receive robust sales growth. Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) saw its sales slide by over 13 per cent during the month as compared to last year. But its biggest competitors such as Hyundai Motors India, Tata Motors and TKM (Toyota Kirloskar Motor) manages to grab strong growth in the last month of the year.

Domestic auto giant Tata Motors India, third largest car maker in India, has received maximum growth in sales which stands near 47 per cent. Company sales around 28 thousand vehicles and positioned ahead of country's second largest car manufacturer, Hyundai India, which sold 400 units less but manages to grab a growth rate of 12.8 per cent. Indian automotive industry had received a sluggish growth for five consecutive months till October due to high lending rates and high fuel prices. Though these streak was broken in the last two months and company saw some growth and normalcy in the market.

During slowdown in market, Maruti India had to face two different problems that are weak demands of its products and a hurting labour strike at its Manesar plant led to a 53.2 per cent fall in the October sales. Company only manages to sell around 55,595 units in October 2011 which is a 53.2 per cent drop from the 118,908 four wheelers in the same time span last year. The labour strike at Manesar plant adversely affects the company strategies and company lost production of over 40,000 units in the October month.Even the smaller sized Maruti vehicles such as Maruti Alto, A-star and Wagon R are also fell down and company saw a hefty drop of 54.9 per cent in October. The other compact cars such as Swift, Estilo and Ritz models registered a sale drop of 56.1 per cent in the month.

In a tussle of regain its market share, Maruti India plans big for Indian auto industry. Company plans to introduce lots of classy cars in India and the most interesting offering would be Maruti Wagon R diesel. It is expected that the new Wagon R will house a three cylinder 1.0 Liter diesel engine which is capable of generating a peak power of 58 PS and a top torque of 150 Nm. The diesel engine will surely improve the fuel efficiency of the car as well, which is likely to be placed around 25 KM per liter. The diesel Wagon R is expected to be priced Rs. 80,000 more than the out-going petrol model of the car. The high petrol prices and high excise duties manipulates the consumers to go for diesel powered cars over the petrol cars. Even this price hike in petrol affects the sales of low priced small cars such as Hyundai EON, Maruti's Alto and Chevrolet Spark because of high running costs. So we can say that it will be a good move from country's leading car maker.
