How to Camp Indoors With Children

    • 1). Set up a tent in your living or family room. Small tents work best indoors but if you have a lot of space, set up a big one. The size of the tent will depend on the number of people sleeping inside. You won't need a ground tarp, spikes or a rain fly inside, so it should be a little less work, especially if you have help from your crew.

    • 2). Move into the tent with your sleeping bags and pillows. Arrange them how you intend to sleep. Extra sleeping pads under each sleeping bag will help.

    • 3). Spread out a large blanket on the floor outside your tent and set up your picnic lunch. Tell stories as you enjoy your meal.

    • 4). Keep the lights off in your house for the entire evening, so when night falls outside, it will darken inside. Make use of your flashlights and lanterns as needed -- for going to the bathroom and for moving around the campsite. A flashlight held just beneath the chin, pointed towards the ceiling, will improve any scary story. Place a lantern in the middle of your picnic area to take the place of a fire.

    • 5). Instead of roasting marshmallows over a roaring fire, you can make s'mores in a microwave. Place one piece of your graham cracker on a microwave safe plate, top it with a marshmallow and microwave for 10 to 15 seconds. You will know it's done when the marshmallow doubles in size. Top it with a piece of chocolate and the other part of your graham cracker and squish them together. It won't be the same as a campfire s'more, but it will still taste wonderful.

    • 6). As you settle down for the night, spend some time in your sleeping bags reading or doing an activity book. Tell more stories as you turn off all flashlights and lanterns. Expect giggling and mirth to continue as you fall asleep.
