The Hesaraghatta Lake was created in the year 1894 as per an initiative taken by Sir K. Seshadri Iyer, the Dewan of Mysore state and the chief engineer of Mysore, M. C. Hutchins, to build a water scheme to ensure a three-year water supply to the city.
The lake is built across the Arkavathy River which originates from the Nandi Hills and this impressive water body can hold a capacity of up to 997M Cft at full reservoir level with a lake surface area of 1,124 acres. Visitors to this site will find that it portrays pure serenity and forms a picturesque backdrop when full with water and is a much-visited tourist attraction point in Bangalore.
The great minds and the hard work that were put to creating this expansive water feature are fondly remembered by the people of Bangalore as this lake has been their primary water source for many years. Bird-watchers visiting the site will be delighted to spot some exotic specimens that call the area home. The electrifying blue kingfishers, purple sunbirds, brahminy kites, common mynas and winter migrants such as harriers and spotted eagles, and over 2,000 water birds belonging to 29 species have been reported in the area.
However, it must be said that the area has fallen into dire straits due to erosion in the catchment and its water capacity shrinking due to continuous silting. Also, in recent years, it has been noted that there has been extensive damage to the grassland and the lake area due to the increase in the number of bird photographers who travel through the area in vehicles rather than by foot. So if you are an authentic appreciator of all things avian, remember to respect the delicate habitats of these peaceful creatures.
