Maintaining an aquarium can be difficult if you don't have the right types of equipment.
One of these important pieces of equipment is a canister filter.
Because there are different types of filtration it becomes even more important that you have a simple system that you can manage easily.
For example, the Fluval 405 canister filter can handle mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration needs.
For those who don't know the difference, please let me explain.
Mechanical filtration removes physical objects like plants, dead fish, and other floating debris.
If you did not remove these types of problems you would suffer from a chemical imbalance and possibly a tank full of dead fish.
Chemical and biological filtration are both designed to remove harmful chemicals in the water.
The difference between the two is that biological filtration uses natural bacteria to break down chemicals that are unwanted in your aquarium.
When you decide on a canister filter you should read the manual or at least check out reviews about it.
Obviously you don't want to be reading a book every time you want clean or do some maintenance.
The Fluval FX5 makes it simple because the canister itself has self-locking snaps which makes it a breeze to open and clean.
You should always make sure that you get a decent warranty with your canister filter because they are expensive to replace.
The last thing you want to end up with is a broken filter than can not be repaired easily.
Fluval is a good company because they usually offer a 3 year warranty.
If your local pet shop can offer you an extended warranty then I suggest you take it.
But don't get me wrong.
I'm not stressing that you should get it because there is a good chance it will break.
I'm stressing it because accidents happen.
A canister filter can handle just about any type of aquarium which makes it perfect for home.
If you already have an aquarium operating you can easily switching filtration over to this style and design.
