Exterior Home Security

Victims of robberies are usually people who would have never thought that it could have happened to them, and yet it does. Crimes like robberies, don't tend to be of the discriminating sort. Thieves will strike whence they find the right opportunity. Keeping your guard up is crucial to protecting your home, your family and your valuables. You need to take extra steps to keep burglars out. A home security system is a great way to do this.

When considering home security systems, you don't actually have to think in terms of devices and gadgets. Preferably, you should think about reinforcing your existing barriers. This means thinking in terms of doors, windows and walls and fences. You have to put as many obstacles up as possible.

Start by assessing the exterior of your house. Before you even get to your windows and your doors, you should take a good look at the outside of your house and what surrounds it. Your first line of defense, after all, should really begin with the perimeter of your home, this means your walls, your fences, and your driveway and yard.
If your home doesn't have any fences, it's a very good idea to start looking into getting one. Ideally, your fence should be tall enough to make it difficult for criminals to climb or jump over. However, simply having a fence acts as a deterrent as it is a barrier. Keep in mind too, that if a fence is too high, should a criminal or thief make it over, no one will be able to see them and all their activities will be obscured by the wall.

Besides walls and/or fences, you can erect other obstructions to deter thieves. You don't necessarily have to sacrifice appearances for home security purposes. You can for instance, put up trellises along the top of your fence or use them to complement any gates. These can add a fair amount of style to any wall or gate and you can even plant thorny roses or other such flowers that would add even more protection against intruders.

Some people choose to put glass, nails and other objects on their walls; this is effective, although it may make your home look more like a fortress than a cozy place to live. You also have to consider that sometimes these things may come off and result in harming an innocent person.

Other solutions include planting thorny hedges around the outside of your home. Plant rose bushes underneath ground floor windows. Remember to lock your gate or fence and don't leave tools like ladders or hammers lying around. If you have a tool shed use it and keep it locked. Maintain your landscape. Keep hedges and bushes well trimmed. Thieves will easily be able to spot gaps or holes that they can take advantage of. Think about placing wedges on the inside of fences where the panels are weak.

Put gravel in your driveway. The noise will make a criminal think twice about trespassing.
