Today, the pharmaceutical industry is a multi-billion industry designed to help you cure whatever ails you.
When this works, miracles happen and people are relieved of pain and cure of disease.
But what happens when the very pills they take from their doctor are the cause of their problems? Prescription pill addiction is quickly becoming one a major issue.
As these companies make stronger medications, it seems they also make harder to quit addictions.
Pills like Oxycodone are stronger and more addictive than past drugs like Valium and codeine-based pain killers.
Even Viagra, a drug designed to deal with impotency, has high value on the black market.
In fact, prescription pills make up most of the list of most abused substances in the world right behind alcohol, cocaine, marijuana and heroin.
Xanax, Vicodin, Oxycodone, Klonopin, and Darvocet are in the top ten.
Some people think that prescription drugs are safer and less addictive than street drugs.
But prescription drugs are only safe for the individuals who actually have prescriptions for them.
Prescription pills are only for those that a doctor has examined and prescribed the right dose of medication for a specific medical condition.
The doctor has also told them exactly how they should take the medicine, including things to steer clear of while taking the drug such as drinking alcohol, smoking, or taking other medications.
The doctors are also aware of potentially risky side effects and can monitor patients closely for these.
There is a fine line between people abusing prescription pills and developing an addictive habit.
Addiction implies that a drug dependency has developed to such an extent that it has serious detrimental effects on the user.
They may be chronically intoxicated, have great difficulty stopping the drug use, and be determined to obtain the drug by almost any means.
While, as with illegal drugs, the ability to get more is usually hampered by having to find someone with this illegal substance, prescription drugs are as readily available to the addicts going to a doctor and asking for a refill.
