It is very difficult to break an old habit in itself and getting yourself immersed in situations where it is easier to break the new resolution is a recipe for disaster.
If you need to, keep a distance from smoking friends and family members until you are sure you won't succumb to the urge to grab a pack of cigarettes and start smoking away along with them.
Drink Fresh Water If you feel the urge to smoke, reach out for a glass of cold, fresh water instead.
Drinking water can help curb those strong urges that can be difficult to control at times.
If you need to have something refreshing, drink lemon or orange juice.
The sweetness of those fruit juices can help alleviate some of the urges you feel to smoke.
Drink as much as you can until those cravings dissipate.
Drink plenty of liquid but do avoid sodas as these contain caffeine which can exacerbate the cravings for tobacco.
Fake Cigarettes If you really need to feel the sensation of the cigarette gliding along your lips, then find a fake cigarette or use a pencil to simulate the feelings.
You can also play with a pencil or a paper clip if you need to feel the slim and slender shape of the cigarettes in your hand.
Above all, do not reach for the real cigarette even if you intend to hold it in your hands without ever lighting up! The craving would be too strong and it won't be long before you would reach for a lighter and set it on fire.
Stay Busy Now that you have successfully quit smoking, find new and exciting activities to fill the gap so you won't be sitting around watching TV where the old temptations could be too strong and might leave you helpless and reach out for that dreaded cigarette.
Munch Keep busy and get something you can much when you are bored.
If you used to light a cigarette when you watch TV, now be prepared to have those old cravings to come back if you are in similar situation, Get ready with a pack of dried nuts or your favorite snack so if those urges should arise, you can reach for food instead.
