How to Make a Fabric Pom Pom Using Cardboard Circles
- 1). Cut a fabric strip about 1/2 inch wide. Cut the fabric stip into several long pieces, about 6 feet long, so they are easier to work with. Or, use several fabric pieces you have lying around the house that measure about 1/2 inch wide.
- 2). Cut two circle shapes the same size with a compass, or by tracing a round object. The larger the circle, the larger the fabric pom pom. For a smaller pom pom, cut the circles to about 3 inches in diameter.
- 3). Cut identical holes in the center of each circle. For the 3-inch-wide circles, cut a hole out of each center that measures about 1 inch in diameter. You now have two shapes that look like cardboard donuts.
- 4). Place the two cardboard donuts together. Hold one end of the fabric and begin wrapping it around both donut shapes by feeding it around the outside of the shapes and through the inside hole.
- 5). Bring the fabric over the end piece a few times to secure it, then work around the cardboard circles. Continue wrapping the fabric around the circles until they are completely covered from one end to the other.
- 6). Cut between the two pieces on the outside of the cardboard circles, cutting through the fabric as well. Cut all around the circles until all the fabric is cut.
- 7). Take a piece of extra fabric or yarn and slide it between these two circle pieces, where you cut, until you hit the center of the fabric. Tie a tight knot at this point, to secure all the layers of fabric.
- 8). Slip both pieces of cardboard over the fabric. If you can't slip the cardboard over the fabric, cut the cardboard to get rid of it.
- 9). Fluff the fabric and make any necessary trims for a finished pom pom.
