How to Identify 1970's Model Ford Trucks Via VIN Number
- 1). Locate the VIN tag located on the rear face of the driver's side door. The uppermost code, consisting of up to 11 digits, F15 YL M40000, for example, is the VIN.
- 2). Decode the VIN number. The 1970s Ford VIN numbers do not identify the year. The VIN number F15 YL M40000 decodes as a F-150 pickup (F15), powered by a 360 c.i.d. eight-cylinder engine manufactured at the Michigan truck plant (YL). The remaining six-digit suffix is the production number assigned specifically to that truck. A Ford VIN tag decoding chart will explain code specifics (see Resources).
- 3). Identify the year truck using the VIN. The production number is unique, it is the number used to identify a specific vehicle if stolen. Comparing the production number to a Ford listing will give the month and year of manufacture.
- 4). Consult a Ford parts department if unsure, or visit the Ford Parts website, which requests the VIN number for a parts search and will give you the VIN specifics (see Resources).
