If you're looking for new tires for your 4x4 then you need to read this article.
We're going to look at the different types of tires available, how they compare and which ones you should choose for your off-road vehicle.
The stock tires that come standard on most 4x4's are really not very effective for off-road use.
The fact is, even though they might be a little more aggressive than the average car or light truck tire, they're still designed primarily for street use.
The first time you get into a slightly sticky spot, or you try to climb over a rock or tree, you'll soon realize that the stock tires are not going to cut it.
Better to realize that beforehand and get some good tires than figure it out when you're hood-deep in a mud hole.
When you're looking at aftermarket tires for your 4x4, there are two main types to choose from - mud or all terrain.
There are various types in each of the two categories, but almost all four wheeling tires fall into one of the two categories.
Mud tires have a much more aggressive tread pattern, with big knobby treads designed to dig into the mud to give you good traction.
These tires are great for off-roading in mud or wet conditions, but they're going to be noisy on the road.
You'll also find they wear faster when used for street driving and your gas mileage may suffer some.
Mud tires aren't ideal if your rig is a daily driver that sees some off-road use.
All terrain tires, on the other hand, have a less aggressive tread pattern.
They're still much more effective than the ones that come stock on most vehicles, but they're more forgiving for street use.
They still do a respectable job off-road though, so for most off roaders they're the best all-around choice.
