What are piles exactly? Piles or hemorrhoids are smallish lumps that are found either in or outside the anal area.
Due to pressure on your rectum the anal veins have filled with blood & become swollen over time.
These lumps tend to be small & typically resemble the size of pea but can be a lot larger like a grape.
The bigger they are the more uncomfortable they tend to be.
Some people will also find that they have more than one of these unsightly little bumps & the colour & shape will vary from person to person.
Piles are most noticeable when passing a bowel motion.
The motion puts pressure on the piles & causes discomfort.
This can also be associated with itching & bleeding in the area during or after you have passed a bowel motion.
The motion can cause the pile to rupture hence the bleeding.
Further episodes in the toilet with a bleeding pile can be most uncomfortable.
Some people will also feel a sense of not being completely emptied out & stretched inside after being to the toilet.
This is due to the bowel sensing the pile as an unpassed motion which is why you feel something is still there.
You may find that there is residue present in your underwear at times because it is hard to clean the area properly with toilet tissue alone.
Piles are categorized into three types.
Internal, external & prolapsed piles.
Internal piles are a medium sized variety of hemorrhoids & usually only visible by a doctors examination.
This is because they are up inside the anal canal & usually appear in the last 5cm before the exit area.
Internal piles are more likely to cause bleeding and that feel of not quite being emptied properly following a motion.
This can also be coupled with itching & pain inside the anus.
External piles are a smaller variety of piles & usually easier to treat.
Commonly seen as brown in colour this is due to appearing on the outside rim of the anus.
They can still bleed & swell quite large if left untreated.
The larger they are the more they may block the anal opening.
External piles are easier to treat as there are more options & you can see all the pile more easily.
A Prolapsed pile is the larger variety of internal hemorrhoid that is very swollen & has protruded out of the anal opening.
They are usually a lot more painful & will be associated with more bleeding that the others but are very treatable.
So there are lots of things to determine if you have the symptoms of piles or not.
