Take The Stress Out Of Moving By Planning Ahead And Getting Organized
And it doesn't matter if you are moving out of your parent's house and setting up your first home on your own, or are a seasoned veteran with many moves behind you.
It is still stressful.
Nobody likes to feel stressed out and fortunately there are steps that you can take to make the whole process of moving a little easier.
Basically it is all about being organized.
If you are moving into your first house you will not need to worry about getting the gas and electric turned off in your old home (your folks might not thank you for that).
Nor will you need to have the phone disconnected.
What you will need to do though, is be sure that the services are connected in your new home.
Dinner by candlelight is only romantic when it's a choice and not a necessity.
You will also need to be sure that the water supply is turned on.
These are all things that you will need to look at long before your move.
The day that the van rolls up, with all of your worldly possessions inside it, is too late.
There is a lot to remember when moving house and new things will probably come to as when you least expect it so carry a notebook around with you to jot important things down in, or pin a list to the door of the refrigerator and add to it when needed.
If you write it down you have no excuse for forgetting.
When you move house the chances are that the things that you use the least will be the ones that you pack away in bags and boxes first.
The essentials like pots and pans and, yeah, the TV will need to be left until last.
These are also the things that you will need to find first when you reach your new home.
Okay, you probably won't have time to watch TV for a while and if you wanted to the TV is one thing that will be easy to find, but what about your pots and pans and your cutlery? It is easy to find these things if you have been organized about your packing, and a colossal pain in the behind if you haven't Try to pack things in a logical manner.
It is a good idea to pack things from the living room separately from your other possessions and to do the same for the other rooms of your house and write on the boxes which room they are from.
Then when you arrive at your new home you can stack all of the boxes in their correct rooms.
Your pans, of course, should be in one of the boxes that are marked up 'kitchen' and if you have been a little more detailed you might have written a list of important contents on the outside of the box which states that the box contains 'pans, cups, saucers and teaspoons.
And when little Timmy wants Mr.
Bear, and refuses to go to sleep until his missing companion is found, you will know just where to look for him as well: in the box marked 'Timmy's room - Mr.
Bear and otherassorted toys.
' If you are using black bags for some of your packing you can write on stickers or masking tape and mark up the bags in that way.
It all sounds like a chew, I know, but it is a lot easier than having to go through twelve bags and seventeen boxes, before you manage to find a soup pan or a clean pair of pants.
Once you are into your new home and have managed to lay your hands on the things that you need, and Timmy and Mr.
Bear are sleeping quietly in their new room, that is only the start, as I am sure that you already know.
It will take a long time to get your home to rights, but let's not forget that there are other things on the list (or should be) apart from the carpets to lay, the curtains to hang and the leaky tap in the bathroom.
There are probably people who will need to know your new address and telephone number.
Different people will have different things on their lists, but a typical list might include:
- Banks
- Employers
- Friends and Family
- Schools
- Catalogues and Magazine Subscriptions
