Blue Sapphire or Neelamis a gem stone which is a variety of Sapphire.Sapphire is made up of mineral corundum, and aluminium oxide.They exhibit a wide range of colours like corundum blue, yellow, pink, purple, orange, and a greenish color because of the presence of trace amounts of other elements such as iron, titanium, chromium, copper, or magnesium. They are extensively used in jewellery. They are found naturally but they can also be manufactured for industrial or decorative purposes in large crystal boules. This gem stone is found in Kashmir, Sri Lanka, Russia,and Americas etc. However the best quality sapphires are found in Sri Lanka.In Kashmir, there is a mining place called Soomjam where best quality sapphires are found.

It also has a huge astronomical l value. It is the fastest and the strongest gemstone Saturn's stone. It is also known as Sauriratna which means Saturn's stone and Shanipriya which means loved by Saturn.

It is believed in astronomy that this gemstone has a magical effect. It can remove evilness of Saturn and it can also remove misfortune if it was used regulary.

There are two types of Blue sapphire which are-

€ Indranil- This is very dark blue like a peacock's neck.
€ Jalanil-It is light coloured in the centre and have dark edges.

There is many other variation of Neelam on the basis of hue.Essentially the Colour in gemstone can be divided into three components: hue, saturation, and tone. But Hue is most widely understood as the main "colour" of the gemstone while Saturation mainly refers to the brightness or "colorfulness" of the colour, and tone is the lightness to darkness of the colour. They are also evaluated for their purity on the basis of primary colour. The secondary hues found in the Neelam are Purple, Violet and green. It is considered that violet and the purple add on to the beauty of this gem while presence of green considered having a negative impact. A fine quality neelam has 15% proportion of violet and purple. The gem which have any proportion of green as secondary colour would not considered being of fine quality.Gray is the normal saturation modifier or mask found in blue sapphires.Gray usually reduces the saturation or brightness of the hue and therefore, has a distinctly negative effect. The 423-carat (85 g) Logan sapphire which is present in the National Museum of Natural History, in Washington, D.C., is one of the magnificent faceted gem-quality neelams in existence.

One can easily buy blue sapphire from any jewellery shop. Many people wear this stone in the form of ring. But this can be found in other forms as well.
